How To Make Money Blogging

According to WordPress.com, more than 409 million people worldwide read a combined 20 billion pages of content each month.

That means bloggers are responsible for millions of hours spent reading content, and readers are still hungry for more.

Bloggers help readers with some of life’s biggest questions:

  • How long do I need to bake brownies?
  • How do I change a flat tire?
  • Can I make a good income without a degree?
  • How do I get a fussy baby to stop crying?

Bloggers are often real-world experts who help fill the void where higher education leaves a gap.

Starting and monetizing a blog has never been easier than it is today.

It wasn’t that long ago that building a website would have cost you thousands, if not tens of thousands of dollars, to set up and maintain. Equally tricky was monetizing a website. PayPal was in its infancy, Stripe didn’t exist, and email marketing was nowhere near as flexible as it is now.

Today, however, you can start, maintain, and monetize a blog on WordPress with just a few hundred dollars (this can vary depending on what you need to do). But just because it’s easier to make money with your blog today doesn’t mean that most bloggers do.

For some, blogging is the ticket to millions of dollars a year in profit. It is a source of frustration and a sense of wasting time for others.

Starting a blog is a legitimate way to earn income, but it is not an overnight commute. With self-discipline, lots of patience, and a commitment to constant learning, you can start making money from a blog in as little as a month.

How to Make Money Blogging For Beginners

Before I explain anything to you, I want you to understand a fundamental concept:  to make money with a blog; you will need much more than being a blogger.

Perhaps this message is the most important in this post: your blog is not the purpose.

If you are an entrepreneur and want to have a successful business, the goal is to sell. In other words, to help your readers advance on their life path in the best way possible.

Prepare to be an entrepreneur before being a blogger.

A good entrepreneur should be clear about their value proposition (how I help my target audience) and their business model (how I make money with my business).

Four reasons why people start blogs

There are many reasons to start a website. Let’s look at a few:

  1. To earn money

It’s okay to start a blog solely to generate income, and blogging for money is a legitimate goal.

But don’t be blinded by the money. You should also enjoy the process of blogging, how to write blog posts, design graphics, and network, or else you will quickly get annoyed by the time it takes to earn real money.

  1. Teach others

An important reason to start a blog is to spread knowledge and help others.

You can use your personal experience to help others go through an experience similar to yours, whether it’s a debt settlement trip or a medical diagnosis. When people visit your blog, they will want to know why they should trust you as a blogger and how your posts can help them.

  1. To build an online portfolio.

Starting a blog to create an online portfolio is a good idea if you are trying to become a freelance writer, marketer, or social media manager.

Almost all potential clients or employers will ask for proof of work, and directing them to an online portfolio will showcase those skills and talents.

  1. As a hobby

Some people start blogging simply as a hobby. When blogging for fun, you don’t have to worry about checking page views, checking ads, and searching for sponsored posts. You can always change direction if you want to earn money from your hobby in the future.

How Much Money Can You Make Online From Blogging?

This depends mainly on how much traffic your blog has? How extensive is your email list? Your blogging income can very realistically be around $ 1,000 per month in the first year.

If you can get 10,000 page views per month, you will earn $ 100 from display ads. In rare cases, you can get more income from display ads if you are in the insurance niche. The main takeaway from the above is that the more people land on your blog, the more money you can make from blogging.

To achieve your goal, you need to create helpful content and promote it to get more traffic and subscribers. It is these two factors that will allow you to make money. Even though blogging takes time, on the other hand, it can give you freedom.

Below are ways to make money from a blog on the Internet. But before we get to that, let’s decide how to measure the income you get from a blog correctly.

To understand the size of your earnings from a blog, you should measure two parameters: User revenue per page view and revenue per email subscriber.

Organic traffic from Google and other sear engines is the most sustainable for a blog. This is why you need to know about SEO and link building.

Since I was getting questions about making money, I gathered everything I knew about blogging into a Free 7 Day Email Course. This course will show you a step-by-step formula for starting your blog from start to finish.

My course contains tips on blogging topics, getting traffic, email marketing, and tips for making money. If you want to make money from a blog, be sure to register for the course, it’s completely free.

Email Lists Are Your Most Important Asset

The most important asset you have as a blogger is your email list (your audience’s email addresses that follow you and trust you). These are the ones who will read your content and buy products that you create/recommend.

An email list is a primary key to earning money from your digital products and affiliate advertising. On average, you can earn $ 0.1-1 per blog on one subscriber. If you have 1,000 subscribers in your email list, you could be making $ 100-1000 per month or more.

Email marketing involves sending emails to potential customers. Email marketing is more profitable than any other marketing strategy. The email marketing service I use is Mailerlite, and here are the best email marketing tools.

The company offers up to 1,000 free email subscribers, and the best part is that you don’t even need to enter your credit card details for the trial period.

I recommend starting building your email list as soon as you start blogging. Remember, an email list is a blogger’s most important asset!

Now, how do bloggers make money?

  1. SELL SERVICES

What is the best way to earn money “fast” with your blog?

Hang up a “hire me” button and sell hours of your time for a fee.

It’s not optimal for your Lifestyle, but it is optimal for your wallet.

Think of offering business-to-business services instead of business-to-customer services since you will have access to more markets.

Here are the top 8 services sold online:

  1. Consultancy
  2. Programming
  3. Design
  4. Writing
  5. Marketing
  6. Virtual assistant
  7. Social media
  8. Accounting finance

The idea is simple: you work for your clients, and they pay you.

You can even be more creative. In today’s world, an army of new services is being born. Here are a few examples:

  • Personal trainer
  • Wedding planner
  • Personal shopper
  • Dog walker
  • Cook at home
  • Turnkey parties
  • Space organization
  • Feng shui
  • Yoga / Meditation
  • Health Coach
  • Spirituality / Tarot
  • DIY and repair

The list is endless.

Think of something that makes a person happier, more prosperous, or freer, sells an experience more than a service, and there will always be someone willing to pay you.

  1. ONLINE AND FACE-TO-FACE TRAINING

This second line of income is also very natural on a blog.

In addition to selling services), you can also sell training.

We are experiencing the Do It Yourself boom. People want to learn and not depend on others. And we have different types of formations of all tastes.

In offline, for example, we have these 5:

  1. Face-to-face coaching
  2. Books
  3. Formations
  4. Workshops
  5. Seminars

Find a rental space and serve your customers. The above businesses will allow you to scale your time since, in one hour, you will be helping more people.

But, if you want to overcome the geographical barrier, you can think of a digital version of your training materials:

  1. Ebooks or Audiobooks
  2. Download courses
  3. Online courses
  4. Intensive online program
  5. Private clubs with membership

A blogger without info products leaves a lot of money on the table. If you don’t want to create an info product, you can promote other people’s products and earn a commission for each sale.

It’s never too late to start, so start now.

I want you to be aware that your Lifestyle as a Blogger depends on your ability to sell info products and promote other people’s products.

Infoproducts can scale almost to infinity.

  1. SELL DIGITAL PRODUCTS

Digital products are different from info products, as no content or information is sold.

What is sold here is the following:

  • Themes / Templates
  • Plugins / Software
  • Audio Video
  • Music
  • Graphic design
  • Photography
  • Apps

Welcome if you are a digital native and you can design or program because the future is yours and you can sell software and services.

If you are not a digital native or have never managed IT projects, I recommend starting with another income stream.

If you have an idea, you can hire a team of designers and programmers to create a product for you which you can then sell on your website.

  1. CREATE INDIRECT OPPORTUNITIES

Another best way to make your blog profitable is not by selling services, training, or digital products; it is by creating indirect opportunities. A good example is a travel blog.

Let me explain this concept.

Imagine an employee who runs a blog where he shares his knowledge on his subject, integrating the training team and achieving indirect sales.

Or imagine the employee who gets a raise because his blog makes him more visible, prominent, and valuable.

Many indirect opportunities would not exist without the blog. Here are some of them:

  • Pay rise
  • Job change
  • Third-party training
  • Alliances with other experts
  • Presentations at events
  • Book with publisher
  • Media
  • Blog Trip

Many of them can generate 5-digit leads.

Others may be less, but if you are a travel blogger and they pay you a trip full of activities so that you can later write your experience on your blog, I’m sure you will be pleased to be paid to travel and write.

1. Independent writing

For some, blogging is not a way to generate passive income, so they focus on earning active income. Freelance writers trade their time for money writing blog posts for other brands and entrepreneurs.

A freelancer can have her blog to find new clients. However, the monetization strategy is based solely on finding independent clients. In this case, your blog’s content could be related to your area of expertise.

You can also have a portfolio in your navigation that shows all the blog content you have written for other clients.

Sharon Hurley Hall runs a blog and freelance writing business. One of her recent blog posts highlights her latest freelance writing gigs where she has a list of clients and articles written for those clients. This helps you get more opportunities by allowing people to find your portfolio quickly.

Your website navigation also includes a services and fees section so potential clients know if they can afford to hire you as a writer.

2. Gifts

Gifts are another way to earn money blogging. While it sounds like you would be spending money giving away a prize, there are ways to monetize your audience. Some gifts have entry options where you must visit a website to earn a point.

Some bloggers add an affiliate link to Amazon for that option, earning a commission in the process and covering the cost of the prize. You can also earn a commission or payment if you promote another brand’s gift by turning it into a sponsored gift.

Another option that an online retailer with a blog could monetize the gifts is to send a finalist prize to all the people who lost the gift. The award? A discount for your online store. Hence, making the giveaway profitable rather than an expense.

Contest Canada is a popular giveaway blog and contest that earns affiliate commissions by promoting giveaways on their blogs. You can check out their advertising page to find out how to make money blogging in the giveaway niche. They also monetize with ads and sponsored posts.

3. Brand associations

You can also make money with WordPress through brand partnerships. Some may compensate you directly or offer you an affiliate link. Others, while unpaid, can help raise your exposure to a broader audience, helping you gain more visibility and new opportunities.

When it comes to brand partnerships, the effort will come from your side when starting. So don’t be afraid to connect with other bloggers in your area to find out what opportunities you can also take advantage of.

And you can also reach out to brands yourself to let them know that you have an existing audience and are available for any opportunity they may have.

Sasha, a lifestyle blog, partnered with Joe Fresh and Flare Magazine for a fall fashion collection with several other notable women. Sasha’s blogger modeled Joe Fresh’s clothes and was part of his “Fashion for All” campaign that revolved around diversity and inclusion.

4. Ebooks

Do you want to know how to make money blogging? If you are an expert on a topic, ebooks tend to be a popular route for many bloggers. When writing an ebook, you don’t necessarily have to create it from scratch.

To save time, you can always take the most popular blog topics and order them in a way that makes sense. Most blog readers don’t have time to peruse every blog post. Don’t be afraid to take the content you’ve already created and reuse it in a different method.

Let’s take a look at the Frugalwoods Blog. The personal finance blog has put together much advice on financial independence and living within your means.

However, to make money blogging, they created an ebook called “Meet Frugalwoods: Achieving Financial Independence Through the Simple Life.” The ebook has over 333 reviews on Amazon, so promoting your blog post on the topic helped drive some upsell.

5. Membership content

Some great bloggers focus on making money blogging through controlled content. What does that mean? Some of your content is available to members only, which means you have to pay to read the exclusive content on your blog.

You tend to see this with prominent newspaper brands or longtime bloggers with large audiences. Some of your blog posts may be available to read, but an email membership subscription form blocks the rest of the article as the article becomes attractive for you to sign up.

Breathe Heavy, a Britney Spears fan blog, is an example of a blog that recently added exclusive membership. Its premium content features exclusive interviews from celebrities and producers.

It also has unique articles based on stories that Britney fans talk about a lot. Its exclusive content is also attractive to ad-free readers who hate sign-up ads.

6. Selling content / articles

Selling content is one of the best sources for making money with a blog today. It consists of a company paying you to speak about it or link towards its Internet site.

How does selling content work?

You have a blog and, therefore, an audience. Some companies may be interested in talking about their solution or product to this audience. They usually contact the blogger directly to publish an article in exchange for remuneration.

Companies can give freebies when a blog is not well known (very popular with bloggers specializing in aesthetics or fashion). Then, when the blog grows, the freebies are usually replaced by gift certificates or cash payments.

And concretely?

Some platforms connect blogs with sites that are looking for link buys.

For example, let’s say you have a site that talks about fashion. You can then register it on these platforms to offer it to sites interested in an article on your site.

Of course, you can define the price and conditions of publication of an article: how many words must be the article, is it possible to have a commercial article, is it you or the advertiser writing the article. You remain in control on board!

Once registered, there are indeed merchant sites specializing in the sale of clothing that will want to publish an article on your site to make their site known to their audience. They will then contact you to offer to publish, and you can accept or decline.

However, to prevent the article from appearing too advertising and your blog eventually dull, you make the article relevant to the reader by providing free information first.

Because that’s what a blog reader is looking for: getting informed! And he will be much better able to accept the publicity if the article has allowed him to satisfy his need for information.

So avoid articles like “Company X launches new service” or “Press release:…”. Internet users often neglect them.

7. Paid promotion on social networks

Potential blog income: $ 1000 + It is in this way that many of the largest and most profitable bloggers earn money.

Paid promotion on social networks works like this: you buy traffic on Facebook, Vk, Yandex, Google to your blog, usually from 2 cents to 0.5 dollars per click, then some percentage of this traffic is directed on one of your affiliate links.

It can be either your product (service) or a partner’s one. You then determine how much you spend on ad clicks to determine your affiliate income. Of course, this requires testing ads on each of the sites.

Over time, when you find a winning combination of ad setup (for example, for every $ 1 spent on advertising, you get $ 1.5 in affiliate income), you can scale it up quickly. This is how the entire entertainment and mobile applications industry works.

I tried a similar product placement – a travel guide to the Philippines. The advertisement worked in a small plus at the very first setting.

8. Consulting with companies

Potential income: from $ 100 per consultation, I had the experience of consulting with a pet accessories company on how best to promote their products online. If you become an expert in your niche and have valuable knowledge, companies will want to partner with you and will be willing to pay you for your expertise.

If you want to get consulting offers, then the best way to do it is through LinkedIn; this is the social platform where I recommend, first of all, to publish announcements of your articles. However, orders will appear only if you are an expert. And you will have a popular blog.

An easy way to find consulting partnerships is to connect on LinkedIn with other bloggers who work with companies in your niche. Contact influential bloggers to clarify contacts with brand representatives if you have something to offer.

9. Speeches at the conference

Potential income: $ 100 – $ 10,000 per show. Conference speaking is difficult and often requires a lot of travel. You also need to have public speaking skills and be quick to navigate all your work areas.

I know some American bloggers who make $ 100,000 a year just speaking at conferences, sharing their knowledge with the audience.

10. Donations

Potential income: from $ 1 per user. One way to make money from your blog is to ask for it. You can start accepting donations in several ways: add a Yandex, Paypal, or Patreon donation button to your website.

These types of earnings work best for video content or graphic content. You can not write openly about this on the blog, but insert a call for donation at the end of each mailing letter. Donations are the last on the list due to their low effectiveness; as in this case, you rely solely on the generosity of your readers.

Patreon page Tip: Offer your readers something valuable. There are other ways to earn extra money from a blog, such as selling products, monetizing your YouTube video on a blog, advertising on podcasts, and others.

Remember that your website is the best blogging platform to make money and a platform to test different monetization methods. The more creative and valuable you are for your readers, the higher your blog income will be, and accordingly, you will earn more.

11. Start a podcast

Podcasting is exploding. According to Paid Insights, as of April 2019, there were over 700,000 active podcasts and over 29 million episodes.

More and more people are starting to listen to podcasts around the world. Here is the percentage of the population that currently listens to podcasts worldwide:

state of podcasting

If you already have a blog, including a podcast can be a brilliant way to get more traffic by capitalizing on the growth of podcasts.

Podcasts are great, especially when you’re a newcomer, because most blogs established in your niche have more written content than you do.

But how many of them have a podcast?

Podcasts are what took Entrepreneur on Fire’s John Lee Dumas from $ 69,879 in revenue in 2012 to $ 1,545,090 in 2018.

Podcasts are doing so well that even famous bloggers like Noah Kagan and Darren Rowse now have podcasts in addition to their regular blog content.

Podcasts don’t just help get your name known and drive more traffic for your blog. They can also be another source of income for your blog.

With a large enough audience, you can start selling sponsorship placements on your podcast to businesses that want to reach people in your audience.

Mixergy’s Andrew Warner generates additional revenue by offering businesses the opportunity to reach their entrepreneurial audience through his podcast.

Here are two of his sponsors for an interview he did with the founder of Codementor:

Where to host your podcast?

To get started with podcasting, you’ll need a place to host your audio files, much like hosting your website.

A media host is a business that allows you to store your audio files so that they can be streamed and downloaded by listeners.

Some media hosts for podcasts include:

  • Libsyn
  • Blubrry
  • Buzzsprout
  • and Transistor

WordPress plugins can help you manage and even host your podcasts like Seriously Simple Podcasting, Smart Podcast Player, and Simple Podcast Press.

What you need to start a podcast

Most people overestimate what they need to start a podcast and therefore never start, but if you already have a computer, you will only need a few more things to get created, such as:

  • A microphone: You can get one for as little as $ 10 on Amazon.
  • Headphones: You probably already have it.
  • Audio editing software: Free options like GarageBand (Mac) or Audacity (Windows).
  • Podcast Hosting: You can get plans as low as $ 12 per month.
  • A Skype or Zoom account: If you plan to do interviews on your show.

That’s it; now you can start creating podcasts for the whole world to listen to.

12. Launch a virtual summit in your niche

If you follow internet trends, you’ve probably heard of or even attended virtual summits.

Remember that virtual summits or web conferences are different from webinars.

The main difference is that virtual summits are much more interactive and engaging. You can attend these conferences online with a host, question and answer sessions, and multiple speakers are covering a specific topic.

While the virtual summits are generally accessible, you can only access them for a limited period. The organizer earns most of its revenue from selling an “all-access pass” that allows participants to view conference material whenever they want.

Tom Morkers, who runs the $ 100k Launch School summit, made over $ 20,000 selling all post-summit access passes.

Launch School

$ 100k Launch School

Virtual summits hosts also earn money by selling related products like membership plans and subject courses after the summit is over.

The part about virtual summits that makes them a great monetization strategy, even for beginners, is that you don’t have to be a known blogger to host one, mainly because you gain credibility by interviewing other influencers in your space.

Jon Schumacher, for example, only had about 2,000 email subscribers when he launched his Mastery Summit webinar.

The summit not only generated nearly $ 26,000 in sales after just ten days, but it also added 2,854 subscribers to its electronic mailing list.

Virtual summits exist for almost any niche you can think of. For example, there is the Best Sellers Summit in publishing, which teaches how to write and publish a bestselling book.

And Membership Site Summit teaches entrepreneurs how to start and grow a successful membership site.

If you’ve already built an audience, you can create a virtual summit by partnering with influencers in your space, even if it’s not ample.

The best way to find influencers that you can connect with in any niche is by using a tool like Buzzsumo.

All you would have to do is go to the Buzzsumo homepage and type in your niche keyword.

For example, if I wanted to hold a virtual summit on book publishing, I would type book publishing in the search box.

Buzzsumo

Enter a keyword in Buzzsumo

Next, be sure to click on the influencers tab:

buzzsumo influencers tab

Buzzsumo influencers

You can then filter by the number of followers, response rate, and other essential criteria.

When you’ve found the influencers in your niche, it can be tempting to reach out to them immediately and ask them to speak to your top, but it rarely works.

Instead, you need to build a relationship with them slowly before making any request. Start by following them on Twitter, then read, comment, and post on their blog. In other words, you must offer value before you apply.

How to Start A Blog And Make Money?

Starting your blog is pretty straightforward. I recommend using the WordPress.org platform because this platform will allow you to make money without any restrictions.

To start blogging, you will need a domain name and web hosting. Domain costs around $ 15 per year, and web hosting costs $ 7.99 per month when billed annually. Fortunately, I discovered a life hack when ordering hosting from Bluehost.

It allows you to get 66% off and a free domain name for our readers. To do this, you need to use our link. As a result, you can get started for just € 2.41 per month. Bluehost is an officially recommended WordPress hosting provider and one of the largest hosting companies in the world.

After purchasing the hosting, you will be ready to install WordPress. Follow the instructions in our step-by-step guide on how to create a blog. The guide will help you get started in less than 15 minutes:

Pick a profitable topic/niche.

First, choose a niche for your blog. You can decide to start a blog by following your everyday life, but it is better to have a specific focus. Staying in a niche and constantly creating content that caters to readers interested in that topic will help the blog build authority in that field.

Here are some of the most common (and profitable) blogging niches:

  • Rising children
  • Personal finance
  • Health & Fitness
  • Fashion and beauty
  • Food
  • Lifestyle
  • Homesteading
  • Travels
  • Technology
  • sports
  • Entertainment
  • Product reviews

These blog niches remain broad and can be narrowed to cater to specific readers. For example, a parenting blogger might talk about all things parenting or adapt articles for parents of an only child, single parents, or parents of a large family.

To give you perspective on which niches may be more profitable than others, take a look at this list of high-income bloggers and their respective niches:

  • Abby Lawson- $ 41,000 + / month -Lifestyle (Home)
  • Trevor and Jennifer Debth- $ 46,000 + / month -Recipe / Food
  • Rosemarie Groner- $ 86,000 + / month -Personal Finance
  • Lindsay and Bjork- $ 90,000 + / month -Recipe / Meal
  • Alborz Fallah- $ 125,000 + / month -Auto / Automotive
  • Elisa Larson and Emma Chapman- $ 125,000 + / month Lifestyle (DIY)
  • Jeff Rose- $ 138,000 + / month -Personal Finance

  • Chiara Ferragni- $ 200,000 + / month -Fashion
  • Sarah Titus- $ 200,000 + / month -Ecommerce
  • Tim Sykes- $ 1,000,000 + per month -Stock trading / investing

These are just a few examples of blogs that make money online.

Top money making blogs and popular blogs:

  1. HuffPost (founded by Arianna Huffington): $11.9 million per month
  2. Engadget (founded by Peter Rojas; now edited by Dana Wollman): $3.9 million per month
  3. Moz (founded by Rand Fishkin; now edited by Morgan McMurray): $3.7 million per month
  4. PerezHilton (Perez Hilton): $3.4million per month
  5. Copyblogger (founded by Brian Clark; now edited by Stefanie Flaxman): $2.9 million per month
  6. Mashable (founded by Pete Cashmore; now edited by Jessica Coen): $2.5 million per month

  9. Smashing Magazine (founded by Sven Lennartz and Vitaly Friedman): $0.43 million per month
  10. Gizmodo: $0.4 million (founded by Peter Rojas; now edited by Kelly Bourdet) per month
  11. Launch your blog

Once you have your niche, it’s time to start writing.

While you should correct your posts and request comments, don’t wait until each post is perfect for publishing. Start writing and be consistent. It will take time to build a fan base, so start posting as soon as possible.

Design a monetization strategy

It is essential to choose a monetization strategy by selecting one or more ways to earn money blogging. While each blog is unique, a few monetization strategies work for most blogs.

Drive traffic to the blog

Traffic is critical on the journey toward monetizing a blog and will generate more potential income. New bloggers should make Pinterest and SEO a priority. The growth of platforms on YouTube and Instagram is also an excellent strategy to generate traffic.

Networking and spending time with people in your specific blog niche is a great way to drive traffic. Over time, followers can share your content and drive even more traffic in the long run.

Guest post

Regardless of how Google criticizes guest posting practices, this strategy works. Writing quality guest posts on others’ blogs is simply the most efficient way to reach your target audience and generate blog readership.

If you’re new to guest posting, Lori wrote a detailed how-to post guide in the past; take a look.

As I see it, the key to success is finding the right blogs, those with real readers and followers on social media. You can use Topsy or Buzz Sumo to spot popular blogs and influencers in your industry. Or you can just take a closer look at the comment section to see if readers are engaging with bloggers.

Keep in mind that you are blogging for real readers (therefore, the quality of your content is crucial). Forget blogging with high Google PR but no readers; this practice no longer works.
